Above Board is a job board for the Greater Toronto Area. Every posting on it states an hourly wage, because the software will not save one that does not. That is the whole idea, and everything else here follows from it.

Why the pay is not optional

"Competitive wage" costs the person reading it an interview, a day off work and a bus fare to find out it was not. It costs the employer the same day. A board where the number is on the row lets both sides skip the meeting that was never going to end in a job, and it is the reason what the work pays is a public page here rather than something you have to be signed in to learn.

What we will not do

• No machine decides who an employer meets. Nothing here ranks, scores or filters the people who raise a hand. The employer reads every one, in the order they arrived, and every posting says so.
• Nobody looking for work is listed on this site. Your name is not a search result. What you write about yourself stays inside the app, where it cannot cost you the job you already have.
• A job seeker never pays us anything. Not to apply, not to be seen, not to be ranked higher. There is no such thing as being ranked higher here.
• Screening questions are picked from a list, never typed. That is how a question that Ontario's Human Rights Code puts out of bounds gets refused when it is written, instead of being noticed by the person it was asked of.

Before a posting is shown

A person at Jilani Place reads it, and sees who posted it. Businesses that are members of the house — with a lease and a card on file — are checked at the door; everybody else waits for that read. A business page answers only for one that has been checked, which is why there are fewer of them than there are companies.

If a posting is not what it says, report it — no account needed — and our written policy says what happens next.

How this is paid for

Employers post for free and always will; the board is no use to anybody if it is half empty. A business that wants a posting held at the top of the board can pay to boost it ($29 for 7 days and $79 for 30 days), and the first boost a business ever runs is free. A boost moves a posting. It has never moved a person, and it cannot: there is no ranking of people here to buy.

Why it is not called Jilani Place Jobs

The board is the GTA, not a building. Titled as a coworking company's careers page it would suppress both sides at once: somebody in Scarborough would not think it was for them, and a restaurant in Brampton would not post a vacancy on a landlord's website. So it has its own name and its own address on the web, and the company behind it is named once, at the foot of every page. That line is not modesty. A new board asking for your work history should have to tell you whose it is.
